人間の我慢強さについて、面白い研究結果がある。4歳児とマシュマロを使った実験だ。
マシュマロを15分間食べずに我慢できたら、もう一個マシュマロをあげます――というルールで4歳児を小部屋に招き、目の前にマシュマロの載った皿を置く。この実験で、マシュマロをじっと見つめていた子供はことごとく我慢に失敗した。15分間耐えることができた子供たちは、顔を手で覆ったり、おさげの髪をいじったり――マシュマロを意識の外に追いやることができた子供たちだった。なかにはマシュマロをぬいぐるみに見立てて遊び始めた子供もいるという。想像してみるとすごく可愛らしい――ってか、めちゃくちゃ可哀相！ 研究者ってヒドイ！（笑）
この実験から分かるとおり「我慢」とは歯を食いしばって耐えることではない。目をそらし、気を紛らわし、忘れ去ることだ。別のもっと楽しいコトを考えることだ。
だから「自分は幸せだ」という人がいても、それが、その人が心から希望した“幸せ”なのか、それとも本当の幸せから目をそらした我慢の結果なのか、観察者には（もしかしたら本人にも）分からない。
